ᄌᆞ봄

Jeju[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Equivalent to ᄌᆞᆸ (jawp-, “to pinch, to grab”) + 음 (-eum, “nominalizer”), but the vowel in the second syllable and the shape of the word suggest that this word is an older formation.
Most likely cognate with Middle Korean 져봄〮 (cyèpwóm, “pinch”). The alternation between Jeju ᄌᆞᆸ다 (jawpda) and Middle Korean *졉다〮 (*cyèptá) hints at a pre-15c. Middle Korean form *ᄌᆢᆸ다〮 (*cyòptá), prior to the merger of /yo/ into /ye/; for another possible example of a similar alternation, see ᄌᆞ물다 (jawmulda).
