From Proto-Celtic *awyos, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ewh₂yos (“grandfather”). Cognate with Old Prussian awis, Latin avus, Gothic 𐌰𐍅𐍉 (awō), and Old Armenian հաւ (haw).
