Khmer
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Angkorian Old Khmer taṃvāṅ ~ tamvāṅ, from Pre-Angkorian Old Khmer taṃvaṅ (“bud, sprout, shoot”). The etymon is comprised of infixal element /-əɴ-/ and the Old Khmer root tvaṅ ~ tvāṅ (Jenner, 2009).
This particular root is inherited from Proto-Austroasiatic *tɓaŋ (“bamboo shoots”) (Sidwell, 2024), and cognate with the likes of Pacoh abáng, Vietnamese măng, Bahnar tơ'băng, Mang ɓaŋ⁶, and Mon တ္ၜၚ် (bɛŋ).
