Etymology

From Old Khmer bhneka, bhnēka, phneka, an -n- infixed form of the verb bek, vek (to part, to separate), whence Modern Khmer វែក (vɛɛk). Displaced the original Austroasiatic term for "eye" (represented by modern មាត់ (mŏət)) in Khmer.
