- The 16th letter and eighth consonant of the Tai Tham Pali alphabet. In Pali it represents the voiced unaspirated palatal consonant /ɟ/, written <j> in the Roman script.
Usage notes
[edit]In the modern vernacular languages, Northern Thai, Tai Lü and Tai Khün, this letter generally represents the language's voiceless affricate consonant /tʃ/, /tɕ/ or /ts/. For these languages, the graphic contrast between ᨧ and ᨩ represents a distinction of tone.
In Lao, this letter represents the consonant /s/. For this language, the graphic contrast between ᨩ and ᩈ represents a distinction of tone.
