Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Mon-Khmer *wa(a)ŋ (“enclosure”).[1] Cognate with Lao ວຽງ (wīang), Thai เวียง (wiiang). Further Khmer វៀង (viəng, “city, metropolis, capital”).
