Etymology[edit]
Perhaps cognate to Ancient Greek βαρύ (barú, “perfume used in incense”). Related to Ancient Greek ἀμάρακον (amárakon, “oregano”), according to Furnée.[1]
The suggestion of Kalléris 1954, who assumes a connection with βαρύς as ‘having a strong (heavy) odor’ (with prothetic α-), is deemed untenable by Beekes.[2]
