Ancient Greek

Etymology

The formation is similar to βελόνη (belónē) and περόνη (perónē). From Proto-Indo-European *h₂eḱ- (sharp), like ἀκή (akḗ), ἀκμή (akmḗ) and ἄκρος (ákros).
