Ancient Greek[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From ἀπο- (apo-) +‎ κτείνω (kteínō, to kill).

Pronunciation[edit]

Verb[edit]

ἀποκτείνω (apokteínō)

  1. I kill, slay
  2. I condemn, put to death (judicial)

Inflection[edit]

The passive forms are late; in the classical language they are suppleted by the corresponding active forms of ἀποθνῄσκω (apothnḗiskō). However, the aorist middle ἀπέκτατο (apéktato) is used with passive meaning in Homer.
