From earlier Ἀρταξέσσης (Artaxéssēs), assimilated to the name Ξέρξης (Xérxēs),[1] borrowed from Old Persian 𐎠𐎼𐎫𐎧𐏁𐏂𐎠 (a-r-t-x-š-ç-a /⁠R̥taxšaçāʰ⁠/).[2]
