From earlier Ἀρταξέσσης (Artaxéssēs), assimilated to the name Ξέρξης (Xérxēs), borrowed from Old Persian 𐎠𐎼𐎫𐎧𐏁𐏂𐎠 (Artaxšaçā, literally “whose reign is through truth”).
