Etymology[edit]

There is no current consensus on the origin of the word. It originally applied only to Anatolia, and was later extended to its current definition. Possibly from Akkadian 𒀀𒋗 ‎(to go out, to rise), a reference to the rising sun, hence “land of the sunrise.”[1]
