Etymology[edit]

There is no current consensus on the origin of the word. It originally applied only to Anatolia, and was later extended to its current definition. Possibly from Akkadian 𒀀𒋗 (to go out, to rise), a reference to the rising sun, hence “land of the sunrise.”[1]
