Etymology

Modified by folk etymology (compare ἄστυ (ástu, city) and ἄγνυμι (ágnumi, break) and the compounds in -αγης (-agēs)) from Ἀστυίγας (Astuígas), Ἀστυιγᾶς (Astuigâs), from Old Iranian. Akin to Akkadian 𒅖𒌅𒈨𒄖 (Iš-tu-me-gu) and possibly Elamite 𒅕𒅖𒋾𒌋𒌋𒅗 (Ir-iš-ti-man-ka), 𒅖𒋾𒌋𒌋𒅗 (Iš-ti-man-ka).

See also Old Armenian Աժդահակ (Aždahak, Azhdahak; Astyages), where the sense "Astyages" was developed by folk etymology.
