From ἐλέφας (eléphas, elephant) +‎ -ινος (-inos, -ine).

Compare Mycenaean Greek 𐀁𐀩𐀞𐀳𐀃 (e-re-pa-te-o), 𐀁𐀩𐀞𐀳𐀍 (e-re-pa-te-jo, made of ivory) formed with -εῖος (-eîos).
