Etymology

From ἐλέφας (eléphas, elephant) +‎ -ινος (-inos, -ine).

Compare Mycenaean Greek [script needed] (e-re-pa-te-o, made of ivory), [script needed] (e-re-pa-te-jo) formed with -εῖος (-eîos).
