From Proto-Indo-European *h₁néwn̥(d)ḱomt (nine tens), from *h₁néwn̥ (whence also ἐννέα (ennéa, nine)) + *déḱm̥t (whence also δέκα (déka, ten). Cognate with Latin nōnāgintā, Old Armenian իննսուն (innsun).
