[edit]Formation like δρῠ́οψ (drŭ́ops, “woodpecker”), on an onomatopoeic basis. Parallel names exist in other languages, like Latin upupa, Persian پوپو (pôpô), Armenian հոպոպ (hopop) and Latvian pupukis.
