[edit]From Ancient Greek Μένδης (Méndēs, “Mendes, a city in Lower Egypt”) which in turn is from Egyptian pr-bꜣ-nb-ḏdt (“temple of Banebdjedet, a ram god whose cult centre was at Mendes”).
