[edit]ⲛⲓ- (ni-, plural definite article) + ⲣⲁⲛ (ran, “name”, noun). Heuser suggest it to be an abbreviation of another name, most likely ⲡⲁⲛⲓⲣⲁⲛ (paniran), "the one of the names".
