Etymology[edit]
ⲡⲁ- (pa-) + ⲛⲓ- (ni-, plural definite article) + ⲣⲁⲛ (ran, “name”, noun), i.e. "the one of the names". ⲣⲁⲛ (ran) also has the meaning "honor", "fame", "reputation" so the name may actually mean "the one of many honors".
