Etymology[edit]
From ⲡ- (p-) + Demotic jpt (“inner sanctum of a temple”), having become masculine in Coptic times. The form without article ⲁⲡⲉ (ape) is the earlier usage. Compare Ancient Greek Θῆβαι (Thêbai) and Ancient Greek Ωφις (Ōphis, “Aba al-Waqf, a village in Middle Egypt”).
