Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Berber *-ăwriɣ, the qualitative perfect verb of *wăraɣ (yellow), from Proto-Afroasiatic *waraḳ- (green, yellow). Cognate with Egyptian jꜣqt and Proto-Semitic *waraḳ-, see there for more. Hardly borrowed from Arabic وَرَق (waraq) for phonological and semantic reasons. See also ⴰⵡⵔⴰⵖ (awraɣ).
