Etymology

An iconically weakened variant of the minor-break marker ⟨|⟩.

1. (phonetics) A prosodic unit more minor than the minor break ⟨|⟩, as found in list-intonation.

   Synonym: ⸾

2. (phonetics, Lithuanian dialectology) A slight pause (silence) in the middle of a syntagm.

Usage notes

In Russian sources, ⟨⸾⟩ may be used with the first meaning.

Illustration in the IPA journal of three degrees of prosodic break, of which ⸽ is the weakest. (It has variably 5 or 6 dots when printed cleanly.) The text in French orthography is repeated in IPA transcription. Note however that ⸽ is not officially part of the IPA alphabet. (The inconsistency with the tone mark on moi is corrected in the next issue of the journal.)
