The () (e) + () (yami, the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, continuative or stem form) of verb 病む yamu “to fall ill, be sick (with)”).

Particularly: “For the component 疫, in place of the kun'yomi reading え (e), plausibility that the first component could have alternatively represented the Kan'on えき (← Middle Chinese (MC ywek)), with イ音便 (i onbin, i sound shift) related shifts (i.e. dropping of /-k-/ before /-i/). ⟨eki1yami1 → */ekʲijami/ → */eijami/ → */ejːami/ → * /ejami/[e̞ja̠mʲi].”
