   Synonyms: 苦瓜 (nigauri), 蔓茘枝 (tsurureishi)

   • 2014, Orange page, Otoku sozai de cooking [Cooking with inexpensive ingredients], volume 15, page 14:

     ゴーヤーはへたを切(き)って縦(たて)半(はん)分(ぶん)に切(き)り、スプーンで種(たね)とわたを取(と)る。

     Gōyā wa heta o kitte tate hanbun ni kiri, supūn de tane to wata o toru.

     Sever the calyx from the bitter melon and cut in half lengthwise, then with a spoon remove the seeds and soft interior.
