リチウム (richiumu): the element lithium.

Etymology[edit]

Borrowing from German Lithium,[1][2] or borrowing from English lithium.[3][4][5]

Given the Japanese pronunciation, a derivation from German seems more likely: the /θi/ sound of English voiceless ⟨thi⟩ is generally borrowed as (shi) in Japanese, whereas the /ti/ sound of German ⟨thi⟩ becomes (chi). English /ə/ also usually becomes (a), while German /ʊ/ becomes (u).

Pronunciation[edit]
