First attested in the Dictionnaire coréen-français (韓佛字典 / 한불자전), 1880, as Early Modern Korean 갑작이 (Yale: kapcak.i). By surface analysis, 갑작 (gapjak, root) +‎ -이 (-i, adverb-deriving suffix).
