개 (gae-, “wild, worthless”) + 오동(梧桐) (odong, “paulownia tree”).

- Phonetic hangul: [개(ː)오동/게(ː)오동]
- Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
