Etymology[edit]

First attested in the Gwangju cheonjamun (光州千字文 / 광주천자문), 1575, as Middle Korean 누튀 (Yale: nwuthwuy). The word 나무 (namu, “tree”) was attached in the seventeenth century, producing the modern form.
