Korean[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Borrowed from Japanese タバコ (tabako) or たばこ (tabako, “tobacco”). First attested in the Jibong yuseol (芝峯類說 / 지봉유설), 1614, as Early Modern Korean 담파고(淡婆姑) (Yale: tamphakwo); thereafter, also attested variously as Early Modern Korean 담파귀 (tamphakwuy), 담바 (tampa), and 담ᄇᆡ (tampoy).
Pronunciation[edit]
- (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [ˈta̠(ː)mbɛ] ~ [ˈta̠(ː)mbe̞]
- Phonetic hangul: [담(ː)배/담(ː)베]
- Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
