Etymology[edit]

First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 며느리 (Yale: myenuli). Also attested in the Worin cheongangjigok (月印千江之曲 / 월인천강지곡), 1449, as Middle Korean 며ᄂᆞᆯ이 (Yale: myenol.i)., as connective form 며ᄂᆞᆯㅇ— (myenolG-) (compare 며느라기 (myenulaki) attested in Cheongguyeongeon (靑丘永言 / 청구영언) , 1728).

May be a compound of (mwoy) (→ (me, “cooked rice”)) + 나ᄅᆞ— (nalo-) (→ 나르다 (나르—, “to carry”)) + (-i, suffix deriving a noun).
