Etymology[edit]

From 원승이 (wonseung'i), from 원성(猿猩) (wonseong( 猿猩 ), monkey, Sino-Korean) +‎ (-i, suffix for animal names). Displaced native term 잔나비 (jannabi).[1]

    • Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
