First attested in the Gugeupganibang eonhae (救急簡易方諺解 / 구급간이방언해), 1489, as Middle Korean 죠〯곰〮. Attested in the form 죠〯고〮매 (cywǒkwómày), with -애 (-ay) appended at the end of the word.
