Mycenaean Greek
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From *Aiguptos (โMemphisโ, โEgyptโ) + -ijos (patronymic suffix). The root *Aigupt- ultimately derives from Egyptian แธฅwt-k๊ฃ-ptแธฅ, a metonymical term for the city of Memphis. Cognate with Ancient Greek ฮแผฐฮณฯฯฯฮนฮฟฯ (Aigรบptios). Compare also Akkadian ๐ญ๐ช๐๐ซ๐ช (แธซi-ku-up-ta-aแธซ /โ แธซikuptaแธซโ /, โMemphisโ) and Ugaritic ๐๐๐๐ (แธฅkpt /โ แธฅikuptaโ /, โMemphisโ) from the same source.
