From Proto-Germanic *furibeudanΔ…, from *furi- + *beudanΔ…. Equivalent to π†πŒ°πŒΏπ‚- (faur-) +‎ *𐌱𐌹𐌿𐌳𐌰𐌽 (*biudan). Compare Old Norse fyrirbjΓ³Γ°a, forboΓ°a, Old High German farbiotan (German verbieten), Old English forbΔ“odan (English forbid).
