From Proto-Indo-Iranian *kā́ma, from Proto-Indo-European *keh₂-. Compare Old Armenian կամ (kam), an Iranian borrowing. Cognate with Sanskrit काम (kāma), Avestan 𐬐𐬁𐬨𐬀 (kāma-), Latin cārus, Old Irish caraid.
