Old Persian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Literally "wearing hats which look like shields",[1] compound of *taka- (โ€œshieldโ€) + *bara- (โ€œbearing, carrying, esteemingโ€) probably a reference to the kausia hat typically worn by the ancient Macedonians.

Compare with Old Median *sparabara- (โ€œshield-bearerโ€), composed of *spara- (โ€œshieldโ€) + *bara- (โ€œbearing, carrying, esteemingโ€).
