Etymology[edit]
Literally means "Greeks who are across the Sea", from πΉπ’π΄π (y-u-n-a /β YaunΔβ /, βGreekβ) + π«πΉπ‘πΉ (t-y-i-y /β tayaiyβ /, βwho, whichβ) + π±πΌππΌπΉ (p-r-d-r-y /β paradrayaβ /, βacross the seaβ),[1] in reference to them living beyond the Aegean Sea with respect to the Achaemenid Empire in contrast to the Asian Greeks, termed πΉπ’π΄π π π«πΉπ‘πΉ π ππΌπΉππΉπ (YaunΔ tayaiy drayahyΔ, literally βGreeks who are by the Seaβ), who lived on the same side of the Aegean Sea as the Persians.
