Etymology

From earlier [script needed] (*ha-k(a)r), from Proto-Indo-European *smฬฅ-krฬฅt (โ€œone timeโ€). The first component of a compound is zero-grade of *sแธ—m, with cognates such as Latin sem-per (โ€œevery time, alwaysโ€) and sem-el (โ€œonceโ€), Ancient Greek ฮตแผทฯ‚ (heรฎs, โ€œoneโ€) and Sanskrit เคธเค•เฅƒเคคเฅ (sa-kแน›ฬt, โ€œonce, at onceโ€).
