Etymology[edit]
From Scythian *Spalarīźa (“commander of army”), composed of *spala (“army”), itself from Parthian 𐭏𐭎𐭐𐭀𐭃 (ispāδ, “army”) (cf. Old Persian 𐎿𐎱𐎠𐎭 (spāda, “army”))) + *rīźa (“desiring, commanding”) (cf. Khotanese rriś (“to desire”), Sogdian 𐽀𐼷𐼵𐼸𐽀𐼰𐼸 (rēš-karē)).[1]
Cognate with Ancient Greek Σπαλιρίσης (Spalirísēs).
