Probably from *𐭀𐭓𐭊 (*ʾrk /⁠*arg⁠/, fortress) (compare Persian ارگ (arg, citadel)) and the suffix 𐭐𐭕𐭉 (pty /⁠-bed⁠/, commander). Cognate with Middle Persian 𐭧𐭫𐭢𐭥𐭯𐭲 (hlgwpt /⁠hargbed⁠/).
