Etymology[edit]

Possibly from *pati-axša-. Akin to Parthian 𐭁𐭉𐭕𐭇𐭔 (bēdaxš [bytḥš]), Old Armenian բդեաշխ (bdeašx), բդեշխ (bdešx), Hatran Aramaic bṭḥš (a type of official), Classical Syriac ܦܛܚܫܐ (pəṭaḥšā), ܐܦܛܚܫܐ (ʾap̄ṭaḥšā, satrap). The Arabic word مُفَتِّش (mufattiš, inspector) is possibly derived from the root of the Syriac word.
