Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Proto-Turkic *mak (“praise”). Cognate with Chuvash мухта (muhta, “to praise”), Azerbaijani maxtanmaq (“to brag”), Uzbek maqtamoq, Bashkir маҡтау (maqtaw, “to praise”), Yakut махтан (maqtan, “to thank”). Compare also Mongolian магтах (magtax, “to praise”).
