From Proto-Turkic *tokuŕ (“nine”). Cognate with Chuvash тӑххӑр (tăhhăr), Old Turkic 𐱃𐰸𐰆𐰔 (toquz), Turkish dokuz and Yakut тоҕус (toğus).
