From Proto-Tai *nɯːŋᴮ (one). Cognate with Thai หนึ่ง (nʉ̀ng), Northern Thai ᨶᩧ᩠᩵ᨦ, Lao ໜຶ່ງ (nưng) or ນຶ່ງ (nưng), ᦓᦹᧂᧈ (nueng¹), Shan ၼိုင်ႈ (nūeng), Aiton လိုင် (lüṅ).
