Etymology[edit]
Bêl-šarra-uṣṣur from earlier *baʿal-śarra-unṣur, literally “May the Lord Protect the King.” Composed of 𒂗 (EN /bêl/, “lord”), 𒈗 (LUGAL /šarru/, “king”), and 𒋀 (URI3 /uṣṣur/), assimilated from earlier *unṣur, jussive form of naṣāru (“to protect”). Comparable in meaning to the English expression God Save the King!
