Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *tulica, formed as ту́ля (túlja, to sheath, to contain) (dialectal) +‎ -ица (-ica). Akin to Old Church Slavonic тоулъ (tulŭ, quiver), Slovene tȗl, tȗlica (quiver), Serbo-Croatian ту̀љац (quiver), Russian тулья́ (tulʹjá, type of hat), Ukrainian відту́лина (vidtúlyna, hole, hollow).

Compare also Tulica (a river and a place-name in Central Bosnia), Tulnik (a village in Croatia).
