Etymology

[edit]

Cognate with Bakhtiari گێز (gız, mad), Northern Luri گێژ (gıj, mad), Dezfuli [script needed] (geyz, dizzy; confused), Northern Kurdish gêj (dizzy), Sogdian [script needed] (kyc /kēč/). Compare also the Iranian borrowings: Middle Armenian գիժ (giž), Middle Georgian გიჟი (giži, crazy, mad; foolish), Assyrian Neo-Aramaic ܓܫ̰ܘܢܐ (gežūnē), Udi ҝиж (gʲiž).

The Persian is probably borrowed from a Northwestern Iranian language, rather than inherited.
