Etymology

[edit]

Perhaps from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀯𑀺𑀲𑀚𑁆𑀚𑀤𑀺 (visajjadi), from Sanskrit विसर्जयति (visarjayati, to send, utter).[1] Turner disagrees, and reconstructs Ashokan Prakrit *𑀪𑁂𑀚𑁆𑀚𑀢𑀺 (*bhejjati), possibly from a Sanskrit अभिअज्यते (abhiajyate, to be led to), with near-regular apheresis of the prefix in Prakrit. The first etymology is slightly problematic, but the changes from s to h in Prakrit is not uncommon and so it is plausible. Tedesco gives the development visajj > *vihajj > undergoing metathesis *vhiajj > *vhejj.

Cognate with Hindustani بھیجنا / भेजना (bhejnā), Punjabi ਭੇਜਣਾ (bhejṇā) / بهیجنا (bhejṇā), Nepali भेज्नु (bhejnu), Odia ଭେଜିବା (bhejibā), Maithili भेजब (bhejab).
