From Proto-Slavic *-ota. Cognate with Russian -ота́ (-otá), Ukrainian -ота́ (-otá), Polish -ota.

  1. Used to form abstract nouns from adjectives; -ness, -ity, -dom.
    бе́дны (bjédny) + ‎-ата (-ata) → ‎бедната́ (bjednatá)
